Born at Moulins, famous diplomat
and general, he won Friedlingen's battle (1702), conquered Kehl
(1703), commanded the Armee de la Moselle (1706-06), pacified
the Cevennes troubled by the camisards religion wars, was wounded
at Malplaquet (1709), and saved France from invasion at Denain
(1712). He then negotiated peace with Austria at Rastatt. De Villars
died in Turin, Italy.
